RRB ALP medical test runs on the A-1 standard, the strictest classification in Indian Railways, and the stage that eliminates prepared candidates who never checked their eyes. Every ALP selected under CEN 01/2026 must clear it after document verification. Here is exactly what gets tested and what disqualifies. Last updated: 11.09.2026.
RRB ALP Vision Standards – A-1
| Test | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Distant vision | 6/6 in both eyes, without glasses (fogging test applies; +2D not accepted) |
| Near vision | Sn 0.6 in both eyes, without any visual aid |
| Colour vision | Mandatory, tested with Ishihara plates and lantern tests |
| Binocular vision | Mandatory |
| Field of vision | Mandatory |
| Night vision / mesopic vision | Mandatory |
The fogging test deserves attention: the examiner places plus-power lenses in front of your eyes to catch candidates who memorised the chart or have latent hypermetropia. If your vision “improves” past a threshold under fogging, you fail even with 6/6 on the plain chart.
These are the A-1 requirements as applied to Assistant Loco Pilot. A-1 is the strictest of the Railway medical classifications, and each CEN carries its own medical standards annexure naming the classification for every post in it. Read that annexure for the CEN you applied under before assuming a standard from another year still applies.
Important Links
The A-1 standard is applied by the Railway medical board, and the medical call letter is issued by your own RRB, not by a central portal. Each board publishes a Medical Examination section per CEN. Every destination below was opened on 11.09.2026.

Note: rrbapply.gov.in is the candidate login for CEN 01/2026, but medical notices are not published there. RRB Chennai carries a Medical Examination section under each CEN, including 01/2026.
One practical warning before you go hunting. RRB Bhopal did not resolve at all when checked on 11.09.2026, and board sites go down without notice. If yours will not open, try another board’s site to confirm the outage is not at your end, then check back rather than trusting a forwarded screenshot.
LASIK and Eye Surgery – Disqualified
LASIK, PRK, ICL or any refractive surgery leads to rejection in the A-1 medical, and railway doctors can detect it in a corneal exam. Candidates who got surgery years ago and now test 6/6 are still rejected. This rule regularly ends selections at the final stage, if you have had refractive surgery, ALP is unfortunately not the post to pursue; several other railway posts with B or C classifications remain open.
General Fitness Checks
- Blood pressure, cardiovascular fitness, hearing test
- Blood and urine screening (diabetes and related conditions matter for running staff)
- No colour blindness, no night blindness, no squint
- General physical examination, knock knees, flat foot and similar conditions are evaluated for running duty
There is no minimum height requirement for ALP. Fitness, not build, is the bar.
When and Where the Medical Happens
The medical examination follows document verification, usually within days, at a railway hospital attached to your RRB zone. Candidates pay a small medical fee at the venue. Fail the medical and the selection ends there, which is why an A-1 standard eye test at a decent hospital now is the cheapest insurance in this whole recruitment. The full stage-by-stage selection flow is on the RRB ALP 2026 main page, and the DV checklist is here.

Frequently Asked Questions
What vision standard does the ALP medical use?
A-1, the strictest classification in Indian Railways: distant vision 6/6 in both eyes without glasses, near vision Sn 0.6 in both eyes without any aid, plus colour vision, binocular vision and field of vision tests.
Can I clear the ALP medical with glasses?
No. A-1 requires 6/6 distant vision in both eyes without glasses, a fogging test is applied and a +2D correction is not accepted.
I had LASIK five years ago and my vision is 6/6. Will I pass?
No. Refractive surgery of any kind is disqualifying for A-1, and the corneal examination detects it however long ago it was done.
How is colour vision tested?
With Ishihara plates and lantern tests, and it is mandatory rather than an optional check. Colour vision failure is not correctable, so it ends the candidature at this stage.
Is there a height or weight requirement?
No height minimum applies. The 3 tested parameters are general fitness, vision and hearing.
What happens if I fail the medical?
The ALP candidature ends. There is no re-test or appeal against the vision standards, which is why candidates check their own eyes before the CBT rather than after it.
