Earlier CENs split the fee — Rs. 500 for general candidates with a Rs. 400 refund, and Rs. 250 fully refundable for SC/ST/female/ExSM/minority/EBC candidates. CEN 01/2026 flattened it: one fee, one refund rule, tied purely to attendance.

The One Condition: Appear in CBT 1

The refund has a single trigger — your biometric-verified attendance in CBT 1. Skip the exam for any reason and the Rs. 500 is forfeited; there is no partial refund for admit-card downloads or travel plans. RRB reconciles attendance across all zones and shifts after the exam completes, which is why the money never arrives quickly.

When the Refund Arrives

Based on how the previous ALP and Technician CENs processed it: refunds started a few months after the last CBT 1 shift, once attendance reconciliation and result processing finished. The CBT 1 date for CEN 01/2026 is not announced yet (expected in the second half of 2026), so the realistic refund window is early-to-mid 2027. The amount returns to the same payment channel you used — the card, UPI handle or net-banking account that paid the fee.

Refund Problems and What to Do

• Payment account closed since applying: RRB issues refund instructions to the original channel; if it bounces, zones publish a bank-detail collection link for failed refunds. Watch your registered email.
• Refund short by Rs. 20-40: that is the bank charge deduction the CEN allows for. Not an error.
• No refund months after others got theirs: raise it with your RRB zone helpdesk with your registration number and payment reference. Refund status queries go zone-wise, not to a central helpline.

FAQs

Will I get the full Rs. 500 back?

Rs. 500 minus the bank transaction charges, provided you appear in CBT 1. The deduction is typically a small double-digit amount.

I will appear in CBT 1 but might skip CBT 2. Do I still get the refund?

Yes. The refund condition is CBT 1 attendance only. Later stages have no effect on it.

Does an absent-but-downloaded-admit-card count?

No. Only biometric-verified presence at the exam centre counts as appearing.

How will I know the refund was processed?

RRB zones notify by SMS/email and the amount reflects in the original payment account. Cross-check against the payment reference in your application PDF, available after logging in.
