Eligibility and age limit
| Eligibility rule | What the bulletin says |
|---|---|
| Master’s marks | General and EWS candidates need 55% and OBC (NCL), SC, ST, PwD and third gender candidates need 50%. |
| Final year students | Candidates waiting for the Master’s result can apply and are admitted provisionally. |
| Time to finish | They must pass within two years of the result, or one year for PhD admission only. |
| Four year bachelor’s | A four year degree needs 75% marks, or 70% with the 5% relaxation. |
| JRF age limit | Not more than 30 years on 01.12.2026, the first day of the month the exam ends. |
| Age relaxation | Up to 5 years for OBC (NCL), SC, ST, PwD, PwBD, third gender candidates and women. |
| Assistant Professor and PhD | There is no upper age limit for either of these two categories. |
Note: We worked out from the 01.12.2026 rule that a General candidate must be born on or after 01.12.1996 for JRF, and on or after 01.12.1991 with the full 5 year relaxation. Relaxation on every ground together, including research experience and armed forces service, cannot exceed 5 years. The 55% is counted without rounding off. A four year bachelor’s route can give JRF and PhD admission but not an Assistant Professor appointment.
Exam pattern and marks by subject
| Subject | Questions set in Part A, B, C | Questions to attempt in Part A, B, C | Questions you may skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chemical Sciences (701) | 20, 40, 60, total 120 | 15, 35, 25, total 75 | 45 questions, 38% |
| Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences (702) | 20, 50, 80, total 150 | 15, 35, 25, total 75 | 75 questions, 50% |
| Life Sciences (703) | 20, 50, 75, total 145 | 15, 35, 25, total 75 | 70 questions, 48% |
| Mathematical Sciences (704) | 20, 40, 60, total 120 | 15, 25, 20, total 60 | 60 questions, 50% |
| Physical Sciences (705) | 20, 25, 30, total 75 | 15, 20, 20, total 55 | 20 questions, 27% |
Note: The bulletin prints these counts, but not the last column. We added it ourselves. Physical Sciences leaves the least room, with only 20 of 75 questions to skip, while Earth Sciences and Mathematical Sciences let you skip half. The bulletin also says that if you answer more than the limit in a part, only the first answers up to that limit are evaluated. Extra answers earn nothing.
| Subject | Marks per right answer in Part A, B, C | Marks lost per wrong answer in Part A, B, C |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical Sciences (701) | 2, 2, 4 | 0.5, 0.5, 1 |
| Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences (702) | 2, 2, 4 | 0.5, 0.5, 1.32 |
| Life Sciences (703) | 2, 2, 4 | 0.5, 0.5, 1 |
| Mathematical Sciences (704) | 2, 3, 4.75 | 0.5, 0.75, 0 |
| Physical Sciences (705) | 2, 3.5, 5 | 0.5, 0.875, 1.25 |
Note: Every subject adds to 200 marks, and we re-added each one from the attempt limits to confirm it. Time is a separate squeeze. With 180 minutes and no break between parts, Chemical, Earth and Life Sciences give about 2.4 minutes per attempted question, Mathematical Sciences 3.0 and Physical Sciences 3.27. A wrong answer in Part C costs more than it looks. In Chemical and Life Sciences it swings the score by 5 marks, since you lose the 4 you could have earned and a further 1. In Physical Sciences the swing is 6.25. Mathematical Sciences Part C has no negative marking, and a question there may have one or more correct options with credit only when all of them are marked.
JRF stipend and what the score gives
| Benefit | What the bulletin says |
|---|---|
| JRF stipend | Rs 37,000 a month for the first two years, with a yearly contingent grant of Rs 20,000. |
| SRF upgrade | Rs 42,000 a month from the third year, after an expert committee reviews progress. |
| Number of fellowships | The count is limited for each subject and changes from one cycle to the next. |
| PhD admission marks | Assistant Professor and PhD only candidates are admitted on 70% test marks and 30% interview. |
| Score validity | For PhD admission the marks are valid for one year from the result. |
| Assistant Professor certificate | The qualifying certificate has no end period of validity. |
Note: Two years of the JRF stipend come to Rs 8,88,000 at 24 months of Rs 37,000, and the contingent grant adds up to Rs 40,000 over the same two years. These are our sums from the bulletin figures, and the grant is reimbursed to the fellow rather than paid monthly. Candidates who qualify only for Assistant Professor and PhD get no JRF.
