CLAT 2027 UG exam pattern and section wise weightage
The UG paper is deliberately a test of aptitude rather than of prior legal knowledge, and the section weightage tells you where the marks actually sit.
| UG paper question | Consortium’s prescribed format |
|---|---|
| Total marks and duration | 120 marks, 2 hours. |
| Number of multiple choice questions | 120 questions of one mark each. |
| Negative marking per wrong answer | 0.25 mark. |
| Current Affairs including General Knowledge | 28 to 32 questions, roughly 25 per cent of the paper. |
| Legal Reasoning weightage | 28 to 32 questions, roughly 25 per cent of the paper. |
| English Language weightage | 22 to 26 questions, roughly 20 per cent of the paper. |
| Logical Reasoning weightage | 22 to 26 questions, roughly 20 per cent of the paper. |
| Quantitative Techniques weightage | 10 to 14 questions, roughly 10 per cent of the paper. |
CLAT 2027 UG syllabus subject by subject
Every UG section is built around a passage of roughly 450 words, so reading speed is the common thread running through the whole paper.
| UG subject | What the Consortium says you must be able to do |
|---|---|
| English Language | Passages of about 450 words from contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction, readable by a 12th standard student in 5 to 7 minutes. Comprehend the main point, draw inferences, summarise, compare viewpoints and understand words in context. |
| Current Affairs and General Knowledge | Passages up to 450 words from news and journalistic sources. Awareness of contemporary events from India and the world, arts and culture, international affairs and historical events of continuing significance. No legal knowledge beyond the passage is needed. |
| Legal Reasoning | Passages of around 450 words on legal matters, public policy questions or moral philosophical enquiries. Identify and infer rules and principles, apply them to fact situations, and see how changes to a rule alter its application. No prior law knowledge required. |
| Logical Reasoning | Short passages of about 450 words. Recognise arguments, premises and conclusions, critically analyse reasoning patterns, judge how conclusions strengthen or weaken with altered premises, draw analogies and identify contradictions. |
| Quantitative Techniques | Short sets of facts, propositions or textual representations of numerical information. Derive, infer and manipulate the data and apply 10th standard mathematics including ratios and proportions, basic algebra, mensuration and statistical estimation. |
CLAT 2027 PG syllabus and question paper format
The PG paper was restructured into a single section and now rests almost entirely on comprehension of primary legal material rather than recall.
| PG paper question | Consortium’s prescribed format |
|---|---|
| Structure of the PG-CLAT 2027 | One section only, 120 objective questions of one mark each, in 120 minutes, with 0.25 negative marking. |
| What the PG syllabus covers | The mandatory subjects of the undergraduate law programme: Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Law of Contract, Torts, Family Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Company Law, Public International Law, Tax Law, Environmental Law, and Labour and Industrial Law. |
| What the passages are drawn from | Extracts from primary legal materials such as important court decisions, statutes or regulations. |
| What each question tests | Ability to read and comprehend the issues and arguments in the passage, awareness of related legal issues and facts, ability to summarise, and ability to apply knowledge of the field of law discussed. |
| Is rote learning enough | No. The Consortium states the PG paper carries an emphasis on the comprehension abilities of students. |
CLAT 2027 eligibility for UG and PG candidates
There is no upper age limit on either paper, and candidates still sitting their qualifying exam can apply.
| Eligibility question | Consortium’s requirement |
|---|---|
| Is there an upper age limit | No upper age limit for either the UG or the PG programme. |
| UG minimum marks | 45 per cent in 10+2 or equivalent, relaxed to 40 per cent for SC, ST and PwD candidates. |
| PG minimum marks | 50 per cent in the LL.B. degree or equivalent, relaxed to 45 per cent for SC, ST and PwD candidates. |
| Can appearing candidates apply | Yes. UG candidates appearing in March or April 2027 and PG candidates appearing in 2027 may apply. |
| What appearing candidates must produce | Evidence of passing the qualifying examination at the time of admission, failing which they lose the right to be considered. |
How to check the CLAT 2027 exam pattern and plan your prep
The structure itself suggests the study plan, because four of the five UG sections are passage driven and share one underlying skill.
- Build reading speed first, since English, Current Affairs, Legal Reasoning and Logical Reasoning all run on 450-word passages.
- Read newspapers for contemporary events, arts and culture and international affairs, rather than memorising static general knowledge.
- Practise applying stated rules to new fact situations instead of learning sections of law, because Legal Reasoning needs no prior legal knowledge.
- Revise only 10th standard mathematics for Quantitative Techniques, focusing on ratios, basic algebra, mensuration and statistical estimation.
- Factor the 0.25 negative marking into your attempt strategy, since blind guessing costs marks on a 120-question paper.
What to do if the CLAT 2027 brochure is not available
Some details candidates look for at this stage genuinely have not been notified, and the press release said as much.
| What you are looking for | Current position as on 22.08.2026 |
|---|---|
| Detailed admission process is not available | The Consortium’s press release states further details regarding the admission process and CLAT 2027 shall be notified in due course. |
| The admit card date is not announced | No admit card schedule has been published. The exam itself is on 06.12.2026. |
| You cannot log in with your CLAT 2026 account | CLAT 2027 uses a separate registration. The Consortium keeps the CLAT 2026 login on a separate portal for last year’s candidates. |
| The syllabus looks different from a coaching PDF | Use the Consortium’s own UG and PG syllabus pages, linked below. They are the authoritative source for this cycle. |
| You need help with the application | The Consortium lists clat@consortiumofnlus.ac.in and 08047162020, working 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on working days. |
