Factors affecting the 2026 cut off
- 12,256 vacancies is the highest count in several years. A higher vacancy count generally softens the cut off by 2 to 4 marks compared to a low-vacancy year.
- Applicant volume for SSC CGL routinely crosses 35 to 45 lakh. Even with more seats, the sheer number of applicants keeps cut offs in the 150+ range for General category.
- SSC normalizes marks across multiple exam shifts. If some shifts turn out harder, normalization can push scores up or down by 3 to 6 marks versus your raw score.
- The Tier 1 paper has gotten slightly more analytical in recent years, particularly in Reasoning. If this trend continues in 2026, expect cut offs to stay closer to the 2023 level than drop significantly.
Qualifying marks vs cut off
SSC does not publish a separate minimum qualifying mark for Tier 1 — the cut off itself is the qualifying mark. For context, the raw minimum to have your paper evaluated is approximately 40 marks out of 200 (20%). But the actual cut off to reach Tier 2 shortlist is typically 150+ for General. Planning for a Tier 1 score of 155+ gives you a safe buffer in the General category.
Post-wise cut off – Tier 2
Tier 2 cut offs vary significantly by post because the most competitive candidates concentrate on high-grade posts like ASO (MEA) and Inspector (Income Tax). For 2024, the Tier 2 cut off for Grade Pay 4600+ posts was notably higher than for Tax Assistant or Auditor. The 2026 pattern is expected to follow the same hierarchy. More details will be added here once the official 2026 Tier 2 cut off is declared.
