The West Bengal Kanyashree Prakalpa 2026 girl scholarship pays an unmarried student ₹750 a year while she is 13 to 18, and a one-time ₹25,000 once she turns 18. A third benefit, K3, is usually written up wrongly: it is worth ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 a month, not a year, and it is for postgraduate study, not a degree course. Checked against the state guidelines and the SVMCM portal on 29.08.2026.
Current scheme status
| Kanyashree status 2026 | Official record |
|---|---|
| Scheme status | The scheme is open and takes applications through institutions. |
| Total beneficiaries | 98.91 lakh girls have benefited so far. |
| Last date | Your school or college sets the last date. |
| Rules | The Kanyashree Prakalpa Guidelines set the rules. |

Note: The state portal was live on 29.08.2026 and takes applications through schools and colleges. The beneficiary count is the figure the portal itself displays. No annual deadline is published. Your school’s or college’s internal cut-off is the one that binds you. The guidelines are issued by the Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, and were checked alongside the SVMCM scholarship portal.

Amount paid, and how often
One benefit is annual, one is once in a lifetime, and one is monthly. Nearly every mix-up about this scheme starts there.
| Kanyashree amount | Amount |
|---|---|
| K1 annual scholarship | K1 pays ₹750 a year. |
| K2 one-time grant | K2 pays ₹25,000 once. |
| K3 Arts and Commerce | K3 pays ₹2,000 a month for Arts and Commerce. |
| K3 Science | K3 pays ₹2,500 a month for Science. |
Note: K1 is paid for each year she stays in education and unmarried, between 13 and 18. K2 is paid once, between 18 and 19, while still studying. K3 is for postgraduate study. K3 is widely printed as ₹2,500 a year. It is a monthly rate, so the yearly value is twelve times what those pages say.
Eligibility conditions
| Kanyashree eligibility | Rule |
|---|---|
| Marital status | The girl must be unmarried. |
| Age for K1 | She must be 13 to 18 for K1. |
| Age for K2 | She must be 18 to 19 for the ₹25,000. |
| Institution | A recognised institution in West Bengal. |
| Education counted | School, college and vocational training all count. |
| Minimum class | She must be in Class VIII or above. |
Note: She must be unmarried when applying, for both K1 and K2, and attend regularly. Secondary, higher secondary, higher education and vocational or technical training all count. The Class VIII requirement is waived with a disability certificate of 40 per cent or more.
The income limit, and the girls it does not apply to
The ceiling is real, and it stops families who assume it stops them. It does not always: the guidelines name three situations where income is not counted at all.
| Kanyashree income limit | Position |
|---|---|
| Income limit | Family income must be ₹1,20,000 a year or less for K1 and K2. |
| Disability 40%+ | The income limit is waived. |
| Orphan girls | The income limit is waived. |
| Juvenile Justice Home | The income limit is waived. |
| K3 income limit | K3 has no income limit. |
| Income proof | A self-declaration or an employer certificate. |
Note: The disability must be certified by the appropriate authority. An orphan has lost both parents, shown by their death certificates. A Juvenile Justice Home must be registered under the Act and the Superintendent certifies residence. A family income that blocks K1 does not block K3. Self-employed parents declare income from all sources. Employed parents produce a certificate from the employer.
Applying through your school or college
- Collect the application form from your own institution. K1 and K2 are not applied for directly by the family.
- Fill it with the girl’s details exactly as they appear on her birth certificate and school records.
- Attach the certificates the form asks for, including the income declaration or certificate unless a waiver applies.
- Submit it to the institution, which verifies the details and uploads them to the Kanyashree portal.
- The district authority sanctions it, after which the money is credited directly to the girl’s own bank account.
The bank account has to be in her name, not a parent’s. Institutions can use a simplified one-page account opening form for girls who do not yet have one.
Checking application status
| Kanyashree status check | What to do |
|---|---|
| Status checking | Check it on the Kanyashree portal. |
| No ID number | Ask your school or college for it. |
| Pending status | It is with the block or district for verification. |
| Sanctioned but no money | Check the bank details on the form. |
| Complaint | Raise it with your institution first. |
Note: Use the application identifier your institution generated when it uploaded the form. The institution holds the acknowledgement. A wrong or inactive account is the usual reason a sanctioned payment does not land. Grievances go through the same block and district officers who process the application.
Timing of the payment
| Kanyashree payment | How it works |
|---|---|
| Payment mode | Money goes directly to her own account. |
| Before payment | The institution verifies and the district sanctions. |
| K1 stop conditions | K1 stops if she marries or leaves education. |
| Renewal | The institution renews it every year. |
| K1 to K2 | She moves to K2 at 18. |
Note: There is no cash counter and no cheque. The institution verifies and the district authority sanctions. The wait is that queue, not a fixed date. The annual scholarship is renewed rather than applied for afresh. The guidelines call the move from K1 to K2 an upgradation.
Papers to keep ready
| Kanyashree documents | Why needed |
|---|---|
| Birth certificate | It proves her age. |
| Proof of enrolment | It proves she studies at a recognised institution. |
| Income proof | Needed unless a waiver applies. |
| Bank account in her name | The money is paid only to her. |
| Disability certificate | It waives the income limit and Class VIII rule. |
| Parents’ death certificates | They prove an orphan for the waiver. |
Note: Age is checked first, for both the 13 to 18 and the 18 to 19 windows. Self-employed parents declare income. Employed parents produce an employer certificate. A parent’s account will not do.
K3 compared with other tiers
K3 is not administered under the Kanyashree guidelines at all. It is delivered through the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means scholarship, which is why its rules look nothing like K1 and K2.
| Kanyashree K3 | Detail |
|---|---|
| K3 course | K3 is for postgraduate study only. |
| K3 marks | She needs 45% in her UG degree. |
| K3 streams | Science, Arts and Commerce are covered. |
| K3 amount | ₹2,500 or ₹2,000 a month by stream. |
| K3 income proof | No income proof is needed. |
| K3 apply | Apply on the SVMCM portal. |
Note: K3 does not cover a bachelor’s degree or a diploma. The undergraduate degree must be from an institution in West Bengal. Science pays ₹2,500 a month. Arts and Commerce ₹2,000. K3 applicants submit no income certificate or affidavit. The link is in Important Links.
Reason for the unmarried condition
Plenty of families read the marriage condition as the state being nosy, or as a penalty. It is neither. The scheme was built to push back the age of marriage by making it financially worthwhile to keep a daughter in education, so the condition is the whole mechanism rather than a piece of paperwork attached to it.
Note: Why the scheme is built this way: the annual money rewards each extra year she stays enrolled, the year a family might otherwise stop paying. The ₹25,000 lands at 18, the legal age of marriage, when the pressure to marry peaks. It stops on marriage because it is a conditional cash transfer, not a general scholarship. Vocational and technical training counts because the guidelines read education broadly. K1, K2 and K3 are administrative names for the three parts of the same Kanyashree Prakalpa.
Reasons for held applications
Almost every stalled case traces back to paperwork that did not match, rather than to a rejection on merit. These are worth checking before the form leaves your hands, because a correction after submission goes back through the same verification queue.
| Kanyashree application held | Fix |
|---|---|
| Name spelled differently | Make the name match on every record. |
| Account not in her name | Open an account in her own name. |
| Dormant account | Reactivate the bank account. |
| Income proof missing | Submit it or the waiver certificate. |
| Age outside window | The K2 grant is lost after 19. |
| Form not uploaded | Ask the institution to upload it. |
Note: The name on the form, birth certificate, school record and bank account must agree. One mismatch holds it. A joint or parent account will not receive it. An account opened for the scheme and never used can go inactive, and the transfer then fails silently. The yearly money stops at 18 and the one-time grant runs from 18 to 19, so a girl who crosses 19 before applying loses the grant. Nothing shows online until the school or college submits the form.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much money does Kanyashree give?
Rs 750 a year while the girl is 13 to 18, and a one-time Rs 25,000 once she turns 18. K3 is separate and pays Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500 every month during postgraduate study.
Is K3 really Rs 2,500 per year?
No. That figure is reprinted widely and it is wrong. K3 pays Rs 2,500 a month for Science and Rs 2,000 a month for Arts and Commerce, so the yearly value is twelve times what those pages state.
My family income is above Rs 1.2 lakh. Can she still apply?
For K1 and K2 the ceiling applies, but it is waived for a girl with 40 per cent or more disability, for a girl who has lost both parents, and for a girl living in a registered Juvenile Justice Home. The ceiling does not apply to K3 at all.
How do I check the application status?
Through the Kanyashree portal, using the identifier your school or college generated when it uploaded the form. If you do not have that number, the institution office holds it.
Status shows sanctioned but no money has come. Why?
Check the bank account recorded on the form. It has to be in the girl's own name and active. A wrong or dormant account is the usual reason a sanctioned payment does not land.
Can she apply directly instead of through school?
No. K1 and K2 go through the educational institution, which verifies the details and uploads them. K3 is different and is applied for on the SVMCM portal.
