The UGC NET June 2026 Syllabus has two parts: Paper 1 is common for all candidates (General Aptitude), and Paper 2 is subject-specific based on the subject you chose during application. The exam is in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. Both papers are held back-to-back in one 3-hour slot. There is no negative marking – so attempt everything.

Paper 1 syllabus – UGC NET June 2026

Paper 1 tests your general teaching and research aptitude. It has 10 units. Each unit carries equal weight, so do not skip any of them.

Unit 1 – Teaching aptitude

  • Nature, objectives and characteristics of teaching
  • Learner’s characteristics, factors affecting teaching
  • Methods of teaching in institutions of higher learning
  • Teaching support systems, evaluation systems

Unit 2 – Research aptitude

  • Research: meaning, types and characteristics
  • Positivism and post-positivistic approach to research
  • Methods of research, thesis and article writing
  • Application of ICT in research

Unit 3 – Comprehension

  • A passage is given and questions are asked based on it
  • Tests reading speed, inference, and understanding

Unit 4 – Communication

  • Nature, characteristics and types of communication
  • Effective communication, barriers, mass media and society

Unit 5 – Mathematical reasoning and aptitude

  • Types of reasoning, number series, letter series, codes
  • Mathematical aptitude: fractions, time and distance, ratio, profit and loss, averages

Unit 6 – Logical reasoning

  • Understanding the structure of arguments
  • Evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning
  • Venn diagrams, analytical reasoning

Unit 7 – Data interpretation

  • Sources, acquisition and classification of data

Unit 8 – Information and communication technology (ICT)

  • Development and environment: Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals

Unit 10 – Higher education system

  • Institutions of higher learning: ancient and modern institutions

  • Value education, gender sensitivity, UGC and regulatory bodies

Paper 2 syllabus

Paper 2 is based on the subject you selected during the application process. UGC NET 2026 covers 87 subjects including two newly added ones: Statistics and Forestry. Popular subjects include English, Hindi, Education, Commerce, Computer Science, Political Science, Economics, History, and Geography.

The official subject-wise syllabus PDFs are available on ugcnet.nta.nic.in. Each subject has around 10 units covering the entire postgraduate-level curriculum of that discipline.

Preparation tips

  • Paper 1 is the same for everyone – cover all 10 units, skip none
  • Logical reasoning and data interpretation questions often decide scores in Paper 1
  • For Paper 2, follow the official syllabus unit by unit – do not rely on shortcuts
