IBPS has released the IBPS SO XVI 2026 (CRP SPL-XVI) notification alongside the exam pattern for Specialist Officer posts. The syllabus and pattern are largely consistent with previous IBPS SO cycles, split into a preliminary exam and a mains exam, followed by an interview. Below is the complete subject-wise breakdown, so you know exactly what to prioritize.
Preliminary Exam Pattern
The prelims stage differs slightly depending on your stream. For IT Officer, Agricultural Field Officer and HR/Personnel Officer, the pattern is:
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 25 | 25 | 80 minutes (composite) |
| Reasoning | 25 | 25 | |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 25 | 25 | |
| Professional Knowledge | 25 | 50 | |
| Total | 100 | 125 |
For Law Officer and Rajbhasha Adhikari, Quantitative Aptitude is replaced by General Awareness with a banking focus, and Professional Knowledge becomes the Specialized Subject paper:
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | 25 | 25 |
| Reasoning | 25 | 25 |
| General Awareness (Banking Focus) | 25 | 25 |
| Specialized Subject | 25 | 50 |
| Total | 100 | 125 |
Each section has its own 20-minute time limit, and prelims marks only qualify you for the mains. They don’t get added to your final score.
Marking Scheme
Each question carries the marks shown above, and there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer in both prelims and mains. There is no penalty for questions left unattempted.
Subject-Wise Topics
- English Language: reading comprehension, cloze test, error detection, sentence rearrangement, fill in the blanks, vocabulary-based questions.
- Reasoning: puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, blood relations, coding-decoding, inequality, direction sense.
- Quantitative Aptitude: simplification, data interpretation, quadratic equations, number series, profit and loss, average, ratio and proportion.
- General Awareness (Banking Focus): current affairs of the last 6 months, banking terms, RBI functions, monetary policy, government schemes.
- Professional Knowledge / Specialized Subject: core technical subject relevant to the post — for example, programming and DBMS for IT Officer, agricultural economics and crop production for AFO, banking and company law for Law Officer, and Hindi grammar and translation for Rajbhasha Adhikari.
Mains Exam
Candidates who clear the sectional and overall prelims cut off move to the mains exam, which is more heavily weighted toward the Professional Knowledge / Specialized Subject paper along with English Language. The mains score, combined with the interview, decides the final merit list. Prelims marks play no role beyond getting you through the door.
Preparation Tips
- Start with your Professional Knowledge subject since it carries the highest weightage in both stages.
- Practice previous year IBPS SO papers to get comfortable with the sectional time limits.
- Keep a daily current affairs habit going for the General Awareness section, especially banking and economy news.
- Revise English grammar basics alongside comprehension practice — this section is common to every stream.
Once your preparation is on track, check the IBPS SO XVI 2026 vacancy notification for eligibility and application details, and keep an eye on the admit card page for hall ticket updates closer to the exam.
