RRB ALP 2026 — Exam Pattern Overview
| Stage | Questions | Marks | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CBT-1 | 75 | 75 | 60 minutes | Screening only (marks not in merit) |
| CBT-2 Part A | 100 | 100 | 2 hours 30 min | Merit (50% weightage in final list) |
| CBT-2 Part B | 75 | 75 | Qualifying only (min 35%) | |
| CBAT | 6 test batteries | 60 | — | Merit (50% weightage in final list) |
Negative marking: 0.33 marks per wrong answer in CBT-1 and CBT-2. CBAT has no negative marking.
Final merit formula: 50% of CBT-2 Part A score + 50% of CBAT score.
CBT-1 Syllabus
CBT-1 has 75 questions across three subjects. It is a qualifying filter — only candidates who clear the zone-wise cut-off move to CBT-2.
Mathematics (approx 20 questions)
- Number systems, BODMAS, decimals and fractions
- LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentages
- Profit and loss, simple and compound interest
- Time and work, time and distance, pipes and cisterns
- Mensuration — area, perimeter, volume of basic shapes
- Trigonometry basics, geometry (lines, angles, triangles)
- Statistics — mean, median, mode
General Intelligence and Reasoning (approx 25 questions)
- Analogies, alphabetical and number series
- Coding and decoding, mathematical operations
- Venn diagrams, data interpretation and sufficiency
- Conclusions and decision making
- Similarities and differences, relationships
- Seating arrangement, direction-based problems
- Syllogism
General Science (approx 30 questions)
- Physics: units, motion, laws of motion, optics, electricity, magnetism, sound, heat
- Chemistry: elements, compounds, periodic table basics, chemical reactions, acids and bases, metals and non-metals
- Biology: cells, tissues, human digestive and respiratory systems, diseases and immunity, nutrition
CBT-2 Part A Syllabus (Merit Stage)
Part A covers four subjects and is the primary merit-determining component (50% of final score).
Mathematics and General Intelligence & Reasoning
Same topics as CBT-1 but at a higher difficulty level. Expect more application-based questions.
Basic Science and Engineering
- Engineering drawing: projections, views, drawing instruments
- Units and measurements, mass, weight, density
- Work, power and energy — concepts and calculations
- Speed and velocity, levers, pulleys, simple machines
- Occupational safety and health, environment education
- IT literacy basics
General Awareness on Current Affairs
- Science and technology developments
- Sports, culture, personalities in news
- Economics — basic concepts, Indian economy news
- Politics — Indian polity, Constitution basics
- Events of national and international importance
CBT-2 Part B Syllabus (Trade Specific — Qualifying)
Part B is based on your ITI trade or engineering diploma stream. You need at least 35% (26.25 marks out of 75) to qualify — these marks are not counted in final merit.
| Trade / Discipline | Key Topics Tested |
|---|---|
| Electrician | Circuit theory, transformers, motors, electrical safety, wiring |
| Fitter | Fitting operations, measurement instruments, blueprints, lathe basics |
| Mechanic Diesel | Engine components, fuel systems, transmission, maintenance |
| Electronic Mechanic | Components (diode, transistor), circuits, measuring instruments |
| Diploma — Mechanical | Thermodynamics, manufacturing, machine design basics, fluid mechanics |
| Diploma — Electrical | Power systems, machines, electronics, control systems |
| Diploma — Electronics | Analog and digital electronics, signals, communication basics |
CBAT — Aptitude Test Pattern
CBAT tests psychomotor abilities required for operating a locomotive. It uses 6 test batteries covering reaction time, hand-eye coordination, depth perception, attention, and memory. Minimum qualifying score: 42 out of 60. This is a 50% component of final merit — do not treat it lightly.
Preparation Strategy
- CBT-1 is the gate — even though marks don’t count, fail to clear it and you’re out. Allocate 3-4 weeks to CBT-1 prep
- CBT-2 Part A is where selection actually happens — spend maximum preparation time on this stage
- Basic Science and Engineering in Part A is unique to ALP — many candidates skip it, which is a strategic mistake
- Part B qualifying mark is 35% — practice your ITI/diploma trade questions, don’t leave it to chance
- CBAT needs separate practice — psychomotor aptitude tests are available online; practice speed and accuracy
