What the Prelims Result Means
The Civil Services Preliminary exam is a qualifying stage. Marks scored in the Prelims are not counted in the final merit. The result simply tells you whether you have qualified for the Mains examination. Your Prelims marks are used only to shortlist candidates for Mains — nothing more.
What Happens Next – Civil Services Mains 2026
- UPSC will release the Mains examination schedule shortly after the Prelims result
- The Mains exam includes 9 papers over 5–6 days
- Two qualifying papers (Essay and General Studies I–IV) and two optional papers
- Mains marks + Interview marks determine the final merit list
IFS Candidates — Separate Process
Candidates who opted for IFS (Indian Forest Service) in addition to IAS appear in a separate Mains examination conducted by UPSC. The IFS Mains has different papers focused on forestry, agriculture, and environment sciences.
Preparation Strategy for Mains 2026
Start with Essay writing — this is the first paper and requires daily practice. For General Studies, build on your Prelims preparation by adding more depth and analytical content. If this is not your first attempt, review the previous year Mains model answers before writing your own answers.
