Haryana Court Clerk Syllabus 2026 – what the exam actually asks

The Haryana Court Clerk syllabus 2026 is set out in Employment Notice 36C/SSSC/HR/2026. The written exam is a Computer Based Test of 100 marks with just two subjects: General Knowledge and English Composition. That sounds light, but the English paper includes a typed subjective section, and the qualifying rules knock out a lot of candidates every cycle. Exam pattern – written exam (CBT)

• Negative marking: 0.25 per wrong objective answer. Unattempted questions get nothing either way.
• Qualifying rule: 33% in each subject separately, and 40% in aggregate. Miss either and you are out, whatever your total.
• The subjective English part is evaluated only if you score 33% or more in General Knowledge.
• Objective marks are normalized across shifts; subjective marks are actual.

Computer Proficiency Test (qualifying only)

Candidates shortlisted from the CBT take the CPT. Part I is a spreadsheet test of 10 marks in 10 minutes; you need 4 or more to pass. Part II is an English typing test at 30 words per minute, checked only for those who clear Part I. CPT marks do not count toward merit. The final select list is built purely from CBT marks, with the older candidate placed higher in case of a tie.

General Knowledge syllabus

• Current affairs of the last 12 months: national events, sports, awards, summits, appointments
• Haryana GK: districts, history, culture, schemes, recent state-level developments
• Indian history, geography and polity, with the Constitution and judiciary given extra weight given the recruiting body
• Basic economy and banking awareness
• Everyday science and static GK: books, capitals, currencies

English Composition syllabus

• Objective part: grammar (tenses, articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement), vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, idioms, sentence correction, fill in the blanks, error spotting
• Essay: about 150 words on a current or general topic, worth 10 marks
• Letter writing: formal or official format, 5 marks
• Precis: condensing a passage in your own words, 5 marks
• Translation: Hindi to English, 10 marks. Daily practice with newspaper sentences helps more than any book here.

Marking and normalization – read this before you guess

The two objective sections together have 100 questions but unequal weight. Each GK question carries 1 full mark, while the 50 English objective questions share 20 marks, so each is worth 0.4. The 0.25 negative marking applies per wrong answer in both. The practical effect: a wrong guess in GK costs you more than twice what it costs in English. If you are going to take risks, take them in the English objective section.

Since the exam will likely run in multiple shifts, objective scores are normalized using the percentile-based formula given in the notification. Your raw score is adjusted against the difficulty of your shift, so do not panic if your shift feels harder than what others report. Subjective marks are taken as awarded, with no normalization.

How to prepare for the subjective section

Thirty marks ride on four typed answers, and this is where merit is actually decided, because objective scores bunch together at the top. Some specifics that help:

• Essay (10 marks, about 150 words): practise finishing in 12 minutes. Topics in court exams lean toward social issues, law and order, and Haryana-specific themes.
• Letter (5 marks): learn the formal format cold — sender, date, salutation, subject line, closing. Format errors are the cheapest marks lost in this paper.
• Precis (5 marks): the rule is one-third length in your own words. Lifting full sentences from the passage is penalized.
• Translation (10 marks): pick five Hindi newspaper sentences daily and translate them in writing. Court terminology (पेशी, अपील, वाद) shows up often.

Preparation pointers

Two things separate selected candidates in this exam. First, typing. The subjective answers are typed on screen under time pressure, and the CPT later demands 30 WPM, so 20 minutes of daily typing practice is not optional. Second, the 33% subject-wise floor. Candidates who pour everything into GK and treat English casually fail the aggregate rule. Split your time roughly 50-50.
